One of the innovative aspects of F.J. Sciame Construction Co. is its division structure. It was created in 1999 to foster the team environment at the firm and to position it for growth while maintaining its small-firm-type dedication to service. The results? Incredible.

By creating multiple divisions with a manager named to each group, Sciame has created units or mini-teams within the firm. The units work together on project after project and form a synergy that can only be replicated in small firm environments. What makes the divisions different from most firms is that they are all generalists, not specialists. There is no "interiors" division, no "core and shell" division. The groups were formed around relationships that managers have with clients.

"It's a horizontal structure which offers incentives for more than just one person to excel", Sciame added. "It also offers unique growth opportunities for people within the divisions."

For example: Caroline is a team member in one division. She compared the new structure to the old structure that was in place in 1999. "In the old structure, I worked for three or possibly four different project managers checking shop drawings. I did the same thing, day in and day out, for people with different personalities, schedules and project demands", Caroline said. "Now I work for one person, one team. I know my manager's style and the goals of each of the projects I work on, which allows me to grow professionally much more quickly than I would in a typical construction firm."

Each division has its own group of estimators, assistant estimators, project managers and assistant project managers. They all share support staff and field operations, which are run by Ralph Thompson, executive vice president of field operations.

The structure sets the stage for future growth. Teams have more incentive to perform. They are compensated based on their success. They operate like separate profit centers.

"The secrets to our continued success in the future will be spreading the organization out and rewarding people for their strong efforts", Sciame said.
